I'm not sure what you are looking for exactly, but I will give it a shot. A strong column is made of something that has a high compressive strength. As most forces on a column are downward, they are compressing the material, so it has to be something that does not crush easily. Some examples of strong columns are steel wide flange (I-shaped) beams (these are actually called W-sections, but are shaped like a wide I), and composite columns made of more than one material, usually steel reinforced concrete. Steel has much higher compressive strength than other building materials.
Hopefully this answers your question, or at least gives you a start.

its for Science! We are building structures and she gave us words and asked for definitions. And this was one of them! I've been looking everywhere and I couldn't find a thing!

Do you have any other specifics? For example what is this related to? What class? What are you studying where this question came up? The reason I as is that this question is very general and it's all relative. I can go into a lot of detail but I might completely miss the point of the questions.
